Signs that you have outgrown your job and what to do

Perhaps it was a job you used to love or just what was available at the time, or maybe you needed to get a foot in the industry and the job was a perfect opportunity. But, now you feel like you are constantly in the doldrums. Maybe your job feels more like a mundane chore. It no longer excites you.

If that’s you, talk with someone you trust. They could help tell if you need a break. Also, reach out to ExecutiveOne’s team of award-winning professional CV writers and career experts. We can help you do something about what you feel.  But first, you should be sure if you need a break or if the job is no longer a right fit.

Below are signs that you have outgrown your job and what you can do about it.

1. It is no longer exciting

Are you bored at work? It is not unusual for anyone to sometimes feel disengaged by their job. However, chronic boredom is a sign that you have outgrown your job.

Do you frequently feel like you are just going through the motions and can do your tasks on autopilot or while sleeping? If it’s a yes, you have outgrown your job.

2. You are stuck in neutral: no longer moving towards your career goals

Is your current job providing the groundwork for your bigger goals? Are you looking for or finding opportunities to learn and expand your skills, boost your experience, and inch closer to your goals? If the answer is no, a job change might be in order. If you cannot find activities that help you feel accomplished or boost your value to the organization, the job is not the right fit for you.

3. There is no challenge

We get energized by taking on informed risks and challenging ourselves to do something new or out of the usual. If you have become more cautious or lost the desire to try challenges and take informed risks, you could have lost interest in your job. For example, if you don’t feel excited about taking on new projects and activities. Instead, focus on the risks and downsides, your time at your current could be over.

4. You seldom get emotional about what you do

Does your job stir some emotions within you? Are you happy, sad, or excited about the day ahead? If you seldom experience emotions at work, your heart is not in it.

Also, if you often feel anger, bitterness, and frustration, perhaps it is time to move on.

What to do

1. Speak to your boss

Finding excitement about your job could be just a chat away. Speak with your seniors about your concerns. Tell them about your goals and have an open mind about the feedback and opportunities within. If the above signs persist, these steps below will help you move on.

2. Get your resume in order – get a professional CV writer

If you have been nodding and agreeing with the above signs of outgrowing your job, you need a change. A shift within might provide relief, but it may not last long.

Prepare yourself for the open seas. Reach out to a professional CV writer and boost your chances of being noticed by other employers. At ExecutiveOne our team of top-regarded CV writers and experienced career experts will help you land a more fulfilling job.

3.  Spruce up your online profile

Sprucing up our online profile on platforms like LinkedIn will also help you get noticed by other employers. You can also get part-time gigs and projects to do during your spare time and break the boredom.

4. Make use of downtime – network and build your skills

If you are coasting at your current job, you will likely have plenty of time at your disposal. Use the extra time to build your skills and networks. But watch out so that you are not disrespectful to your present employer.  Building skills and networks will improve your position when taking a chance at new opportunities.

A final word

Evaluate your engagement level and satisfaction at work. Be brutally honest, especially when reading the signs of outgrowing your job. Such an assessment will help you get an objective view. Following it up with the above list will help you make changes that set you on track to loving your job again.
