Which begs the question: what should you do to consider keeping up?

To which the answer remains, being in a job for the future will determine if you stay in one role or you will have to keep changing jobs over time. In other words, there are certain things that you must do in order to make sure to future-proof your career.

While the guidelines below are broad and are meant to help you stay in touch with the latest trends, they can also work to make sure that you’re in a job for the future.

Tip 1: Diversify your skills

Tony Pownall, General Manager Recruitment in Auckland admits that “people change direction often.” That is because the skills you possess now can eventually be out of demand later on. Of course, there are going to be new skills that you might have to acquire so as to be relevant. For this, you might have to attend seminars or industry talks while also being able to re-educate yourself if necessary. Learning these new tools and technology are important to help you market yourself.

Tip 2: Answer in the affirmative to a new job for the future

There are a number of new jobs for the future that you’ll find yourself being offered throughout your career. This could involve mentor programmes , volunteer work, requests for advice or even niche presentations. Event participation and job offers could also be a part of these new opportunities, too. This will require you to make tough decisions as a result. But if you adapt to each of these situations, you will absorb new skills which, in turn, will increase your marketability when it comes to new employers.

Tip 3: Find work that is both meaningful and fulfilling

Working just for the money will not offer career longevity. This is despite the fact that being remunerated fairly is important. Instead, try to choose careers that help you learn new things and grow too. This way, both your job and life will feel more meaningful than usual. That said, if you truly enjoy what you do, then this will give you a better chance of succeeding in the future.

Tip 4: Create a strong network

When you create a strong network of highly skilled professionals, you can share information efficiently. Pownall believes that even though New Zealand is a small place, there is still lots of value in maintaining an up-to-date network. This will help you get to where you want to go. If you wonder how you can go about it, all you have to do is to simply pick up the phone and speak to people as they will be able to put you in touch with contacts when necessary.

In closing…

Opting to look for a job for the future is wiser than you can imagine. This is especially important if you are in an advanced stage of your career too. It’s vital that you keep your “curiosity quotient” high at all times.

So, are there any other tips that you can think of that will help you ensure you’re working in a job for the future? If so, feel free to share them in the comments section below.
